Getting Blunt About the Bob

Michelle O. Rihanna. Keira Knightley. Katie Holmes. Victoria Beckham. Jennifer Aniston…and the list goes on. At some point, all of these ladies have fallen in love with the bob, a cut that was first made famous in the 1920s and given new life by Vidal Sassoon in the ‘60s. According to NYC hair guru Sam Brocato, the bob will never go out of style. “We keep it fresh and new with different color and textures,” he says. “But it has to be done right!” Here are a few tricks from Sam to ensure this classic style looks classy, every time. Proportion is everything: height, weight, body proportions, size of forehead, length of neck and face shape; they all matter! For petite girls, a shorter, more angular shape works best. Conversely, this approach wouldn’t cut it on someone with different proportions. Any texture can be “bobbed;” even the finest hair. The caveat? Ladies with fine hair should have a very blunt cut in the back. Maintain your client’s bob by scheduling her appointments every 8-10 weeks. “Bobs are quite low-maintenance,” Sam says. “They’re great for clients with busy lifestyles.”

If there’s one cut and color combination that is completely of-the-moment it’s silky, long strands with a blunt fringe paired with subtle ombré color. It’s current! It’s chic! It’s divine!

Behind the Scenes with Josh Wood & Eugene Souleiman

Josh Wood and Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Directors for Wella Professionals, have created, by far, the most outstanding blonde collection to date. “We’ve covered the whole spectrum of creativity, from being able to create something that is very young and very punchy, all the way through to something that’s very elegant and very chic,” says Wood, Global Creative Color Director. This collection embraces the warmest characters and the coolest tones of the blonde spectrum, and these multi-faceted images will inspire you to bring out your clients natural beauty.

Before we get down to business, did you know that blondes represent over 50% of all color services requested in the salon? Women choose blonde more than any other haircolor, and highlights are the most requested color service. And in over half of all color services, the resulting color is lighter/much lighter than the starting base color. Interesting, huh? Thanks to Josh Wood, you can learn just how to do it.

LDid you know that British Vogue considers Wood ’the cult colorist of our time’, a true modernist on color creation? The reason he is the Global Creative Color Director for Wella Professionals is because he has firmly cemented himself as the “colorist of choice” amongst a wealth of prestigious celebrity clients and international fashionistas. His dedication to Blondor and the Wella Professionals blonde portfolio has enabled him to create this latest breathtaking Blonde Look Collection. “We are showing you three very individual looks that best represent the diversity and the ability that Blondor has,” says Wood. “This collection has been created to inspire you to push the boundaries of your own creativity.”

As blonde is so significant to your business, Wella Professionals is passionate about taking its support on blondes to the next level. That’s why they are bringing you the Blonde Pro Series, a major blonde support program in two phases that will empower you to exceed in blonde. Phase 1 is an improved Blondor with new breakthrough 2-in-1 lightening and toning product. Phase 2 is Koleston Perfect Special Blonde with 5 new shades. Wood and Souleiman would not have been able to bring their vision to life if it wasn’t for Wella bringing this support program to life.

LLet’s talk about these three looks for a moment; Blonde Impact, Blonde Impression and Blonde Infusion.
Blonde Impact is an all-over blonde service. It is ideal for confident clients who want ‘statement’ blonde looks to express their personality. It’s that client who takes good care of their hair and one that is willing to invest in maintaining the look. Think fashion driven clients following trends. “On Louise, we have done a global application using Blondor Extra Cool Blonde Powder. Together with the cut, this created a really up-to-the-minute edgy, very fashionable, almost ethereal blonde,” says Wood. The result is you will lift hair and give stunning, cool blonde results in its purest form.

Blonde Impression is a partial blonde service. It is ideal for clients who want to enhance their look with noticeable blonde effects with super natural-looking results. They also take good care of their hair and are willing to invest in maintaining the look. “On Eugenia, we warmed the color up a little bit, and created a blonde that probably is a bit more sophisticated both in technique and in color choice,” says Wood. The result is the hair is enriched with multifaceted blonde effects with exquisitely natural blending.

Blonde Infusion is a stunning highlighting service, a request you will experience quite often. It's ideal for that client who hasn't thought about going blonde just yet. Think of it as training wheels or an ‘introductory’ level to blonde. It is for clients who want to emphasize their personal style with individual effects. “On Heide, we really wanted to show the diversity by creating something that looked incredibly natural but yet still in the blonde family,” says Wood. The result is infused hair with blonde highlights or the effects to complement any look with a touch of light. It’s almost like a kiss of blonde.

And we know you can’t have stunning color without stunning cut and styling which is where Eugene Souleiman comes into play. Once the cuts for these three lovely ladies were completed, Souleiman busted out his trustworthy products and got to work. He created two styling options for each model.
Let’s look at them individually like we did before:

Three Pretty Prom Hair Ideas

By: Angie Manson

School’s almost out! Soon, prom-going gals will load up your chairs in dire need of the perfect ‘do. And the difference between a prom style and a bridal style is that you usually don’t have the advantage of doing a consultation prior to the big day. That means you’ll be responsible for coming up with a style on the spot and you’ll need to deliver exceptional results. And when it comes to high school students, a prom look is all about being unique and different, so whether your client wants something up, down, or in between, here are three options that are sure to please.

UP
The chic, teased updo Giuliana Rancic wore to the Oscars this year was simply fabulous, and it’s a great option for prom-going clients looking for a modern upstyle. Plus, it has a beachy texture that’s totally on-trend for the season. Here’s the how-to:
1. Apply Alterna's Bamboo Smooth Kendi Pure Treatment Oil to damp hair and blow-dry straight.
2. Add a beachy, natural texture by wrapping small sections of the hair around a 1-inch curling iron, directing the wave away from the face.
3. Gather the hair into a high ponytail leaving a little height in the front and pulling the sides tighter. Secure with an elastic band.
4. Lightly tease the ponytail into a textured poof.
5. Create a large bun and secure with French bobby pins.
6. Finish with Alterna’s Bamboo Anti-Humidity Hair Spray and follow with Bamboo Smooth Kendi Dry Mist Oil to add extra shine.

DOWN
Lots of high school gals love to wear their hair down for prom because it’s unfussy, slightly more casual and just plain cool to do. So when we spotted Liv Tyler at the Los Angeles premiere of Super, we knew it would be a style prom-bound girls would fawn over. Her do, created by celeb stylist David Babaii, is shiny and wavy, and her locks are perfectly tousled. Here’s how to recreate her ‘do:
1. Apply Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment from roots to ends.
2. Rough-dry the hair using your hand, moving the hair in various directions.
3. Once dry, randomly take sections of various sizes and wrap them around a large-barrel curling iron, holding for several seconds before releasing the curl. Allow each curl to fall naturally.
4. When the desired amount of waves is achieved, apply more Pequi Oil to your hands and run them through the strands to define each wave and add shine.
5. For additional lift at the scalp area, spray a light holding hair spray on your finger tips and apply to the root area by roughly massaging into the area. This creates added fullness and texture.

IN-BETWEEN
For his daughter Jade’s prom hair, celebrity stylist Roy Teeluck stuck to her rules for something simple, sophisticated, sexy and modern. She also didn’t want to worry about fixing her style throughout the night. Sounds like the typical high school girl! Here’s how you can recreate Jade’s look on your client:
1. On damp hair, apply a styling mouse for extra volume.
2. Blow-dry the hair in small sections with round brush, then wrap each section in a loose curl and pin as you go.
3. Once entire head is dry, undo the pins and ask your client to flip her hair over.  Use a smoothing cream like L’Orčal Professionnel Smooth Essence and run it through the hair gently with your fingers.
4. Ask your client to flip her head back over, and then use a flat brush around the face to add more polish.
5. Create a deep-side part, gathering hair towards the side of the head and secure the top layers with bobby pins.
6. Use a light hairspray, like L'Orčal Professionnel Infinium 3 Hairspray to create a manageable hold.

PROM LOOK

Loosey Goosey

Philip Pelusi is a backstage staple at New York Fashion Week. His presence and incredible styling have been a constant year after year, especially for designers Lorick and Venexiana. For their recent Fall Fashion Week shows, Philip created informal and casual “loose updos” to complement each of their carefree collections. This look is very elegant, modern and a bit “less-than-perfect” compared to your common updo. To get the look, allow the hair to air-dry or use a diffuser to create texture. Consider utilizing a texture iron to create depth and dimension. Next, pull the hair back into a low, nape-level loose updo. Leave the outer perimeter of the hair out to create that loose, tousled look. Finish with a medium hold spray and remember "not-perfect" will look absolutely perfect.

 Client Testimonials

HI!!  Thank you so much for following up.  The hair do is going great!  I know at first I wasn't quite used to it, but I have played with it a lot now, and it is definitely growing on me! It is just hard for me to get used to, being my first actual short hair style since I shaved it! Thanks to Liz again, and I will see you soon!!

I really enjoyed the Atlantic Studio.   I will definitely recommend it to my friends.  It is a full service salon with open and relaxing feel rather than being stuffy and snobby.  Everyone was helpful and friendly and made me feel completely at home and pampered.  I purchased a number of new products while I was there when I normally am a "wait and see" person.  There wasn't any pressure to buy anything, but the ladies were good at listening to my needs and desires and found products that suited me.

Tricia did a great job with my hair, and Janine was super with nails. I need to thin out a layer so I am scheduled to see Tricia for a quick touch up this week.  I am debating about a full pedicure but I don't need one yet!

My hair is doing great, thanx. Had a very good experience with/at your salon and Vinnie was a joy and did a great job. I had my 9-year-old daughter here (From Germany) and she enjoyed the hour or so @ Atlantic, as well.
Thanx for asking and I'll see you guys when my mop starts getting unruly again.
